The smudging ceremony has been a sacred ritual for the Native Americans and for many other tribal people for thousands of years. It is a ritual of cleansing and purification for the physical and spiritual bodies. Each person, animal, rock, plant, and home has an auric field which can capture negative energy. The smudge bowl is a vessel into which you place your cleansing herbs (sage, cedar, or sweet grass).

Smudging Ceremony: You then light the dry herbs with a match so that the dry herbs light up. After allowing it to burn for a few moments, you fan the flames out with a feather so that the herbs are now smoldering. It is the smoke, not the flame, that is used as a cleansing agent. Once you have the smoke you simply walk around your room in a clockwise fashion with your bowl in your hand, using a feather, to fan the smoke into all area of the room.
